Holy Daisy (After Gertrude Stein’s Sacred Emily)

Love, Love, Love (Gertrude Stein), Charles Demuth

A ROSE IS A ROSE IS A ROSE,
EXCEPT WHEN IT’S A DAISY.

From the little gravestone I mean cute old sign you picked up from church
oh months ago displayed in her sweet back yard

They had it coming, didn’t they?

Wet mud in your little high heels that aren’t kitten heels no.
He tripped when he pushed his way too far into the dark
you didn’t see anything after the first thunk
they came in for a glass of water not for feminine favors,

And your husband wasn’t home so
“You shouldn’t have opened the door for strange men!”
but they were so young and
 beautiful
innocent-looking, sweaty from the heat outside and just normal

Working Men of the 1950s right?
it was in their cards to die today
       you didn’t do ANYTHING wrong!

Wipe your hands on your apron:
  put down your shovel now.
  no one will know;
you are the wiser for once!

‘whoops!’ time to pick up the kids!
